From December 20, 2024, to March 16, 2025, the Fosun Foundation for Art in Shanghai will present the ‘Accidental Wes Anderson’ Aesthetic Photography Exhibition. This exhibition, inspired by Wes Anderson’s visual style, combines elements of film aesthetics, photography art, and spatial design.
The title ‘Accidental Wes Anderson’ is inspired by the Instagram account created by American couple Wally Koval and Amanda, which collects retro symmetrical images in Wes Anderson’s style from fans around the world. These images echo the architectural, scenic, and momentary elements found in Wes Anderson’s films. Over 300 photography works, approved by Wes Anderson himself, have been selected for display.
The exhibition is divided into nine thematic areas: ‘Open the Photo Album’, ‘Final Stop’, ‘Mind the Gap’, ‘Please Check In’, ‘Swimming Pool’, ‘European Classics’, ‘Stars and Stripes’, ‘Collective Colors’, and ‘Relax in Nature’, reconstructing scenes from Wes Anderson’s films. As a representative of postmodern film aesthetics, Wes Anderson’s works such as ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, and ‘The French Dispatch’ have created a unique visual semiotics. He skillfully uses deep perspective and geometric composition to create dramatic visual tension.
The first area, ‘Open the Photo Album’, starts with everyday life scenes, capturing ordinary moments frozen by photographers’ lenses. These photographic works showcase how to ‘discover the extraordinary in the ordinary’ through their compositional aesthetics. Architectural art and interior design serve as excellent carriers for geometric composition, becoming the main visual presentation in Wes Anderson’s films. ‘Final Stop’ presents iconic buildings from around the world in the form of Anderson-style corridors, emphasizing symmetrical composition and perspective. Meanwhile, ‘European Classics’ and ‘Stars and Stripes’ focus on European and American architectural arts, from the classics of the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, and American architecture represented by Cleveland’s Severance Hall.
