Upon arriving at Shanghai’s Yu Garden, the first thing one sees is the inscription ‘Famous Garden by the Sea’ at the entrance, behind which lies the San Sui Hall. The Hall of Admiring the Mountain and the Great Rockery are just beyond. It was a rainy day, and the scene was like a fairyland, ethereal and dreamy. Entering further, beyond the rockery, and following the winding path, one arrives at the Wangjiang Pavilion. Near the entrance of the Wangjiang Pavilion, the rockery is closely observed, with its peculiar shapes and the spring water gushing forth. Although one cannot climb it, the close view is already magnificent. Passing through a small door leads to the Yu Le Pavilion, which offers a unique scenery. Following a small stream, one encounters Yu Linglong, Dian Chun Hall, De Yue Pavilion, the inner garden, the ancient stage, and more than forty other pavilions, rockeries, and ponds. Yu Garden features many brick carvings and clay sculptures. It displays cultural artifacts such as the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, the Palace of the Moon, the Longevity Picture of Guo Ziyi, the Plum Wife and Crane Child, Going to the Capital for the Exam, and the Triple Success in the Imperial Examinations. Wang Zhideng, Dong Qichang, Wang Shizhen, and Mo Shilong have all composed poems and painted in Yu Garden. Yu Garden is the premier classical garden in Shanghai. Its exquisite design, delicate layout, tranquil beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship are renowned. The pavilions, towers, rocks, and lakes are often praised as the best in Jiangnan. It is a place that embodies the essence of culture and is a must-visit destination for tourists.
