Tianma Mountain

Tianma Mountain, referred to as the ‘Shanghai Leaning Tower of Pisa’, is often joked about for not being very high, with an elevation of just over 100 meters. Climbing it can be surprisingly tiring due to the steep slopes. The mountain, one of the Nine Peaks of Yunjian, has lush vegetation and a serene environment. It features cultural landmarks such as the Memorial Park of the Three High Officials, Sword Viewing Pavilion, Flute Listening Pavilion, and Pine Lying Pavilion, as well as the Hu Zhu Pagoda, also known as the Hu Zhu Bao Guang Pagoda. Built during the Northern Song Dynasty with a brick and stone structure, the seven-story octagonal tower stands at 18.82 meters tall, with a lean that surpasses that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. It is a protected cultural site in Shanghai. Legend has it that Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty once donated relics that emit light, hence the name Hu Zhu Bao Guang Pagoda. An ancient ginkgo tree to the east of the pagoda, with branches resembling dragon claws, is said to have been planted by Zhou Wenda and is known as the ‘mountain god’s hand’, supporting and protecting the Hu Zhu Pagoda for thousands of years.
