She Mountain

She Mountain, with a height of only 99 meters, is an easy climb. Although not tall, She Mountain is the starting point of Xu Xiake’s ‘Ten Thousand Miles Journey to the Southwest’. Xu Xiake visited She Mountain five times, four of which were to meet the renowned literary figure and calligrapher, Chen Jiran, who lived in seclusion on the eastern part of She Mountain. Sheshan is also the place where Emperor Qianlong toured Jiangnan. It is home to a Catholic pilgrimage site, the earliest observatory, and a thousand-year-old pagoda… Shanghai Sheshan National Forest Park is divided into two parts, east and west. The step passage in East Sheshan is very beautiful. The trees on both sides are tall and lush. It is already so green. Here is connected to the ancient road of Qianlong. At the intersection, there are thousand-year-old banyan trees and blooming camellias. From the foot to the top of the mountain, everywhere is green. The air is fresh. Standing at a high place and enjoying the mountain breeze, I love the beautiful spring. At the top of West Sheshan is the landmark Sheshan Notre Dame Cathedral. The church was first built by French missionaries in 1871 and completed in 1935. The Pope of Rome canonized this church as a basilica in 1942. It is the first basilica in the Far East canonized by the Pope, making it the Catholic pilgrimage center in the Far East. Only when standing under the church can one discover its grandeur. It combines multiple architectural styles. Its arches and corridors are Romanesque, the colonnades are Greek, the spires are Gothic, the olive-shaped bell tower is Israeli, the small dome at the east end is Spanish, the clear water wall and the fighting corner floor tiles are in Chinese national style, and the glazed tiles are in Chinese palace style.
