Fanghezhou is situated on the southwest shore of the lake along Chengnan Road in Jiaxing City, facing the ecological oasis of Southwest Lake across the water. During the reign of Emperor Dezong of Tang, the virtuous minister Lu Zhi built a residential garden on Fanghezhou, which was named Hezhu due to the presence of a pavilion for releasing cranes. In the time of Emperor Wenzong of Tang, the prime minister Pei Xiu constructed a villa on the islet, renaming it Pei Island. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the poet Zhu Dunru settled in Jiaxing and reclaimed Pei Island as Fanghezhou. Spanning an area of approximately 52,000 square meters, including 9,714 square meters of water surface, the scenic spot retains its natural topography with lakes on all sides, winding waters, and a mix of trees along the flat banks. The primary function is to provide a tranquil space for rest and appreciation of the scenery, complemented by lotus ponds, water chestnut fields, fish ponds, and orchards. Along the lake, gates, pavilions, and pavilions are tastefully arranged, following the natural contours and striving for an ecological design. Danranju, Guiliguan, and Jiafutang are the main buildings within Fanghezhou that reflect the Tang and Song dynasties’ architectural styles. Open all year round from 06:00 to 22:00.
