Fengcheng River Scenic Area

Fengcheng River is a moat that encircles the ancient city of Taizhou in a square shape. The scenic spots are concentrated in the southeast corner, with the Wanghai Tower area on the north bank and the Taoyuan Scenic Area on the south bank being the main attractions. Willows line the riverbanks, and cultural buildings are scattered in an orderly manner. Strolling along the river or boating on it is very pleasant, and there are also night light views to enjoy.

The core attraction on the north bank is the Wanghai Tower, which was first built during the Song Dynasty and later rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, offering a panoramic view from the top. To the west of Wanghai Tower is the Wen Huitang, housing statues of Fan Zhongyan and Teng Zijing. North of Wanghai Tower, there are the remains of the ancient city, the Ancient City Moat Sculpture Square, and the Stele Garden, which features stone tablets inscribed with poems praising Taizhou.

On the south bank, the Taoyuan Scenic Area’s waterside pavilion is an excellent vantage point for viewing the Wanghai Tower. The core attraction of Taoyuan is the Chen An, a building with Ming and Qing architectural styles, consisting of three sections, furnished with antique Ming and Qing furniture, and decorated with works by Kong Shangren’s ‘The Peach Blossom Fan’, Zhong Zhenkui, and the history of Taizhou opera.

To the west of Chen An is a stone boat, to the north are the Qingfeng Pavilion and Laifeng Tower, and the Peach Blossom Island to the south is filled with peach blossoms, which are very beautiful when they bloom in spring. North of the Taoyuan Scenic Area is the Mei Lanfang Park, which features the Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall, showcasing the life and art of the Peking Opera master with various materials and artifacts.

To the west of the Taoyuan Scenic Area is the Chinese Traditional Architecture Culture Museum, where visitors can see cultural relics related to architecture, such as the Luban ruler and compass. The boats on Fengcheng River include pedal boats and electric boats, with prices ranging from 30 to 40 yuan depending on the type of boat. For a more scenic experience, it is recommended to take a night cruise on a painted boat.

The night tour route starts from Taoyuan Wharf, passing by Yingchun Bridge, Mei Garden, Liufang Teahouse, and Guandi Temple before returning. Other attractions in the Fengcheng River Scenic Area include the Xuan Zheng Imperial Examination Hall and Qiao Garden. To the east of Taoyuan is the Taizhou Old Street in Ming and Qing styles, which can be visited together. Visitors can buy souvenirs and taste local delicacies such as Cao Lu Biscuits, Taizhou Dried Shreds, and Qinhu Eight Fresh on the old street.

If you just want to take a leisurely walk, there is no need to buy a ticket to enter the scenic area as there are many green spaces along the river for strolling, and at night, you can see the lit-up painted boats cruising on the river. Opening hours are from 08:30 to 17:30 all year round. Service facilities include free stroller rental (a deposit of 500 yuan is required), located at the Customer Service Center, and a mother and baby room at the Taoyuan Visitor Center, where visitors can feed and take care of their babies for free, as well as change diapers.
