Wanghai Tower, originally constructed during the Song Dynasty and reconstructed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, commands the spirit of the Jianghuai region and is hailed as the ‘First Tower of Jianghuai’. The current Wanghai Tower adheres to the architectural style of the Song period, featuring an exterior with three levels of encircling corridors, with a primary color scheme of chestnut and gray, exuding an air of simplicity and elegance. Compared to historical records, the tower is more majestic, with smooth and graceful lines, and its presentation is refined and transcendent, harmoniously aligning with the existing ancient architecture in Taizhou.
West of the tower lies the Wen Huitang, historically built by Teng Zijing of the Northern Song Dynasty. It lists the historical materials of Yan Shu, Fan Zhongyan, Fu Bi, Han Qi, and Lu Yijian, who all served in Taizhou during the Northern Song period and later became chancellors. In front of the hall stands a ‘Five Chancellors Tree’ and a bronze statue of Fan Zhongyan, created by Wu Weishan, the president of the China Sculpture Institute. Together with the existing thousand-year-old state city ruins and the ancient Han canal within the scenic area, all showcase the brilliant history of Taizhou, which was established in the Southern Tang Dynasty, flourished in the Northern Song Dynasty, and was home to famous officials and cities.
