The Former Jiangsu Provincial Governor’s Office Site is located at No. 20, Shuyuan Lane, Canglang District, Suzhou City, and was listed as a Suzhou cultural heritage site in 1982. It is now under the protection and management of Suzhou Health School. Adhering to the principle of restoring the old as it was, in July 2005, the Suzhou Municipal Government carried out protective emergency repairs on the site. Originally the site of Heshan Academy, it was transformed into a government office during the Yongle years of the Ming Dynasty. From the establishment of the provincial governor in the Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, over 480 years, many famous officials governed here, including Zhou Chen, Hai Rui, Liang Zhangju, Zhang Boxing, and Lin Zexu. Lin Zexu served for five years and was highly admired by the people for his outstanding political achievements. The Former Jiangsu Provincial Governor’s Office was originally quite large in scale. The existing buildings include the main gate, ceremonial gate, rear hall, and rear building, which were reconstructed in the fifth year of the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1866). The original main building, the grand hall, was demolished in 1980. The main gate features a hard mountain top with a width of five spans (23 meters) and a depth of 10 meters. The opening hours are subject to the daily operational status.
