The former residence of Ba Jin is located on Wukang Road in Xuhui District. The iron gate under the shade of trees is extremely low-key and unremarkable. Mr. Ba Jin, a literary giant, and his family lived here for more than forty years. Literary works such as Ba Lao’s novel ‘League Members’, prose collection ‘Endless Feelings’, translation work ‘Past and Random Thoughts’, and ‘Random Thoughts’ were completed here. The former residence is composed of a three-story main building and two small auxiliary buildings. There is a garden beside the building. The main building was built in 1923 and was once the business representative office of the Soviet Union. In 1955, Ba Jin and his family moved here to settle down. Today, the living room, dining room, study, and other rooms in the building have been restored according to Ba Jin’s layout during his lifetime. The garden is filled with various plants, many of which were planted by Ba Lao himself. The first floor of the former residence is mainly an exhibition room where you can see Ba Jin’s works and used items. You can also visit the kitchen and balcony. The balcony is where Ba Jin wrote in his later years. The second floor is the bedroom and study. The bedroom is neatly arranged. The study displays many books collected by Ba Jin. Although you cannot enter for a visit, you can see the room clearly from the doorway. The third floor is Ba Jin’s archives room and is not open to the public. After visiting the building, you can come out and take a walk and look around in the garden. The garden is not large, but the environment is good. It is a quiet place in the bustling city. In the consulting room nearby, there are Ba Jin’s works for sale and commemorative stamps can be stamped.
