Liu Yu is a descendant of Liu Qing, the Chu Yuan King and younger brother of Liu Bang, the first emperor of the Han Dynasty. His family migrated south with the Jin court in the early years and settled in Zhenjiang, living on Shouqiu Mountain in the east of the city (now inside Mengxi Campus of Jiangsu University).
