The former residence of Shen Shou is located in the middle section of Shantang Street in Mudu Town. Shen Shou was a famous ‘Queen of Embroidery’ in the late Qing Dynasty. She spent her childhood at her grandmother’s house on Shantang Street in Mudu. There, she learned embroidery by threading needles with her elder sister Shen Heyi and began her artistic career. The former residence of Shen Shou was originally the small secluded garden of the Li family in the Ming Dynasty. In the early years of Emperor Qianlong, it was purchased by Xu Shiyuan, the owner of Hongyin Mountain House, and was expanded and renovated, thus forming a layout of a front residence and a back garden. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Xu family was gradually declining and sold the east garden to the Chen family. The Chen family had a niece named Shen Yunzhi, who later became the famous ‘Queen of Embroidery’ Shen Shou. Mudu Town has set up the ‘Shen Shou Memorial Hall’ in the restored east garden of Hongyin Mountain House, which not only increases the tourist projects of Shantang Street but also promotes the traditional Suzhou embroidery skills.
