This magnificent mansion in the south of the Yangtze River is, as you might expect, the residence of Zhang Songxian, one of the ‘Four Elephants’ in Nanxun. Later, Zhang Jingjiang, the grandson of Zhang Songxian, inherited this house. After Zhang Jingjiang met Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Europe, he continuously provided financial support to the latter’s revolutionary work. The former residence is very deep. It is a traditional three-entry and five-room building in the Qing Dynasty.

Each entry has one hall and five rooms. There is a courtyard between each entry. Each entry is higher than the previous one. This is the legendary step-by-step promotion. The interior decoration is simple and grand. The carvings in the details are extremely challenging for craftsmen. The unique and exquisite brick carvings behind the front and back gates have the meaning of adding the finishing touch and must not be missed.

Compared with large mansions of the same period, the former residence of Zhang Jingjiang is very unique. In terms of architectural style, it does not incorporate Western architectural elements, and the overall style is more simple and quiet. At present, various precious photos, letters, appointment letters and other cultural relics about Zhang Jingjiang’s life story are displayed in the second and third halls of the former residence.

These cultural relics are provided by the Second Historical Archives of China in Nanjing. Opening hours: Open from 08:00 to 17:00 all year round.
