On November 1, 1945, the Border Government of Su and Wan was established in Huai’an, serving as the people’s democratic united government of the four major liberated areas: Central and Northern Jiangsu, and the Southern and Northern Huaihai. The existing site of the Border Government consists of two courtyards, covering an area of 6,100 square meters. It preserves 48 rooms of brick and wood structure with a quaint and elegant appearance (including some two-story buildings), with a construction area of 1,300 square meters. The 26 two-story buildings in the north courtyard, which were originally the office location of the Border Government’s Liaison Office, are now used for the display of historical materials of the Border Government and the life display of Li Yimao. It exhibits more than 280 historical photos and 140 pieces of cultural and historical documents, fully restoring the historical appearance and great achievements of the Border Government at that time, as well as the brilliant and combative life of Li Yimao, the head of the Border Government. There is also a bronze statue of Li Yimao, a place for respectfully pouring wine over Li Yimao’s ashes, and a hexagonal pavilion designed by Li Yimao himself for visitors to pay their respects. The south courtyard consists of four bungalows with a total of 22 rooms, which were the offices of the head and deputy head of the Border Government, the secretary-general, and the meeting room.
