Fu Gui Lou is located at the Wuding Gate section, situated at the ‘corner’ between Wuding Gate and Yuhua Gate. It is a tall watchtower built on the east side of the city wall’s southern gate during the Southern Tang Dynasty.
Historically, the southern city has always been a strategic military location, a key point of defense. The terrain is flat and open, making it extremely important. It is also an area where the Qinhuai River is quite close, right at the traffic artery, controlling the throat of the road, playing a role where one person guarding the pass can block ten thousand soldiers. Therefore, not only was a larger and taller watchtower built on the southern gate, but Fu Gui Lou was also added to strengthen the defense.
