The Gaobei Tulou cluster is located in Gaobei Village, Gaotou Township, Yongding County. The village is home to dozens of earth buildings, nestled against the mountains and waters, with a staggered layout. The Wuyunlou, built during the Ming Dynasty without a stone foundation, narrates the long history of Tulou, while the elegant Qiaofu Building showcases the sincere love for their country and hometown by overseas Chinese.

The ‘Lord of Tulou’ within the village – Chengqi Building is the most representative Tulou. In July 2008, at the 32nd World Heritage Committee held in Quebec, Canada, ‘Fujian Tulou’ was inscribed on the World Heritage List, with the Gaobei Tulou cluster being one of them. Chengqi Building was constructed by the fifteenth ancestor of the Jiang family, Jiang Jicheng (1635-1719), taking three years to complete in the 47th year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign (1708).

During these three years, the weather was ideal for wall ramming, and in gratitude for the divine assistance, locals also called it the ‘Heaven-assisted Building’. At the time, the Yongding County Magistrate Zeng Jiushou (who served as the county magistrate from the 46th to the 50th year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign), along with the educational commissioner Li Shimao and the instructor Wu Fei, visited the Chengqi Building and admired Jiang Jicheng’s vision and achievements, with Zeng Jiushou presenting him a golden plaque inscribed with ‘Pride of the Nation’.

This plaque is still well-preserved today.
