Gaixia is located within Lingbi, Anhui Province, and is known as one of the world’s seven ancient battlefields, being the site of the decisive battle between Chu and Han during the Chu-Han Contention. It is now a 2A-level scenic spot and a key cultural relics protection unit in Anhui Province.
In 202 BC, the Chu-Han Contention culminated at Gaixia, where Liu Bang decisively defeated Xiang Yu’s Chu regime. The Battle of Gaixia laid the foundation for over 400 years of Han Dynasty history, from which the terms Chinese characters, Chinese language, Chinese culture, and Han ethnicity are derived.
This battle was unprecedented in scale and has had a profound impact on the history of wars in China and around the world, earning it the moniker ‘The Waterloo of the East’ from experts.
Compelling and poignant stories such as ‘Surrounded by Chu Songs’, ‘Ambush on All Sides’, and ‘Farewell My Concubine’ are widely circulated among the populace and originate from this very place. The site is open to visitors from 10:00 to 18:30 all year round.
