The Gao Ting Mountain Scenic Area is named after the Gao Ting Mountain within its territory, which derives its name from the Gao Ting God. The Gao Ting God is the main deity worshipped by the ancient inhabitants of Gao Ting Mountain. The term ‘Gao’ refers to a highland by the water, while ‘Ting’ signifies a gathering place for people, hence Gao Ting Mountain is a highland where humans settled and thrived during the formation of Hangzhou. It has a history dating back to ancient times, flourished during the Qin and Han dynasties, reached its peak in the Tang and Song dynasties, and continues to this day. Its millennia-long union with the Shang Tang River has nurtured a unique local civilization. Emperor Qin once inspected the area, Ding Lan honored his parents here, Bai Juyi prayed for rain, Du Mu resided here, King Qian built a city, Su Dongpo opened a canal, Emperor Gaozong sought refuge, Emperor Ningzong inscribed words, Wen Tianxiang argued, Wang Meng secluded himself, and Jin Nong found his final rest here.
