Nestled along a river in Baishu Village, Nanbin Street, Rui’an City, an ancient architectural eave protrudes from within the courtyard wall, capturing the attention of passersby. This is the former site of the Jishan Academy, where Gao Zecheng, the progenitor of Nan Opera, studied over 700 years ago. Adjacent to it stands the Gao Zecheng Memorial Hall. The entire structure is simple yet grand, with a couplet in front that reads ‘This place has nurtured jade, and the person can be cast in gold,’ and the horizontal inscribed board bears the title ‘Progenitor of Southern Tunes.’ Inside the Gao Zecheng Memorial Hall, Gao Zecheng’s works are on display. To the south of the memorial hall, there is a cenotaph for Gao Zecheng, and to the east lies the Gaoming Academy. Gao Zecheng, also known as Ming, with the courtesy name Huishu and the art name Caigen Daoren, was referred to as Dongjia Master. He is a renowned Chinese playwright and a global cultural celebrity. His creation, ‘The Pipa Ballad,’ is acclaimed as the ‘Progenitor of Southern Tunes’ and possesses enduring vitality, making it a treasure of Chinese culture. It is now a patriotic education base and a cultural heritage site protected by Rui’an City.
