Gaojing Garden is located by the city river in the urban area of Liyang, surrounded by water on all sides and connected to the mainland by a bridge. This small park is known for its elegant layout, reminiscent of Suzhou gardens, with ponds, rockeries, pavilions, and long corridors arranged in a harmonious and pleasant manner, making a stroll within the garden a delightful experience.
Gaojing Garden was originally established in 1930 as Liyang Park and was rebuilt in 1987, taking on its current name. The park features numerous attractions, including Jin Dou Garden, Peony Pavilion, Evening Fragrance Pavilion, and Qinglai Thatched Cottage. The ‘Gaojing’ stone within the garden is a fine example of Taihu stone, rumored to have been a gift from Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty to Zhao Gui of Liyang.
The historically significant Taibai Tower, built on a high mound within the garden, is a place of great interest. Li Bai, the great poet, visited Liyang three times in his life. In the fifteenth year of the Tianbao era (756 AD), Li Bai bid farewell to Zhang Xu, the ‘Sage of Calligraphy’, at a Liyang tavern and composed the poem ‘Mighty Tigers’. Inside the tower, there is a full-length statue of Li Bai, capturing the essence of this great poet facing the wind with a cup in hand, singing with a sense of generosity and sorrow.
The garden is open all year round from 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
