Gaoqiao Town – A Historic Water Town in Jiangnan

Gaoqiao, an ancient water town in Jiangnan, boasts a long history and profound cultural heritage. Though the area of Gaoqiao is not vast, it is surrounded by water on three sides and has been home to numerous celebrities and historical sites. Visit the Gaoqiao Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall to listen to local stories, appreciate the charm of the ancient town, and get close to cultural heritage by admiring folk treasures. The exhibition hall houses over 600 exhibits, mostly genuine, with the majority originating from local civilians. It is divided into nearly 30 sections, condensing more than 870 years of Gaoqiao’s history and providing a comprehensive reflection of Gaoqiao’s historical culture, production and life, as well as local customs and traditions.
The museum is located in Yangxiantang, a cultural preservation unit in the district, situated by the Gaoqiao Port, featuring a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, which is quite beautiful. It takes about ten minutes to reach the museum after crossing the Ji Jing Road Bridge, with a very beautiful and antique scenery along the way. Many old residences are still preserved, such as the Zhong Family Residence, Du Yuesheng’s Family Temple, Huang Family Residence, Jingyetang, Yangxiantang, and Yin Family Garden.
