Gaoyou Lake, also known as Zhuhu Lake and Biwa Lake, is located in Gaoyou City, Jiangsu Province. It is the sixth largest freshwater lake in China and the third largest freshwater lake in Jiangsu Province. The total water area is 760.67 square kilometers. When the water level is 5.55 meters, the beautiful Gaoyou Lake is a shallow lake. There are also many wild waterbirds such as wild ducks and egrets. The national key protected birds, Oriental White Stork, Red-crowned Crane and Egret also breed and overwinter here. Gaoyou Lake is called a suspended lake because its water level is higher than that of the canal. There are several small lakes, among which the larger ones are Zhuhu Lake, Bishe Lake, Ping’a Lake and other 36 lakes. And all the lakes are connected. The total area is 760.67 square kilometers (including 648 square kilometers of water area, 112.67 square kilometers of reed beach and dam area. The water area within Gaoyou City is 431.5 square kilometers, accounting for 60% of the total water area of Gaoyou Lake). It is the watercourse for the Huaihe River to flow into the Yangtze River. The water surface is wide, the environment is beautiful and the products are rich. Gaoyou Lake wetland has rich biological resources. At present, there are 153 known plant species, including 131 aquatic plant species of 53 families. There are 122 wild animal species, among which there are 13 wild animal species under provincial-level protection. There are 63 fish species.
