Gucheng Lake in Nanjing, named after the ancient ‘Gucheng’ by the lake shore, is commonly known as Xiaonan Lake. Originally a lagoon by the sea, coral fossils from the time were found and collected on the limestone of the eastern rock and Huashan area, historically known as Danyang Daze. Over the years, sediment from rivers and streams formed lake beaches, and through generations of reclamation, the vast lake was divided into Danyang, Shizhou, and Gucheng lakes. Among them, Gucheng Lake is the only lake owned by Gaochun County, covering an area of over 30 square kilometers with clear water quality, rich in fish, shrimp, and water caltrops.
