Located in the northwest of West Lake, Hangzhou Botanical Garden is filled with greenery, resembling a vast open-air botanical museum. People often visit during holidays to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and breathe in fresh air. During the early spring, when the Lingfeng Plum Blossom Exhibition takes place, the garden is particularly lively.

Garden Tips: The botanical garden has two entrances, north and south. After seeing the large archway that reads ‘Hangzhou Botanical Garden’, continue straight to the end and turn right for the north entrance (Yuquan Gate), or turn left for the south entrance. Both sides offer self-driving access to the garden with paid parking lots available. The garden is best explored on foot, although there are many directional signs, it’s easy to get lost amidst the vast greenery. However, this place is perfect for casual strolling, which should take about two to three hours, so allocate enough time.

Seasonal Highlights: Hangzhou’s warm and humid climate ensures that the botanical garden has something to offer in every season. The garden is divided according to different plant species, including the Maple Azalea Garden and Peach Blossom Garden suitable for spring (February-March), the Osmanthus Garden for autumn, and the Lingfeng Plum Blossom Exhibition for early spring (January-February). On the east side of the office building, there is a ‘Herb Garden’ with over a thousand medicinal plants, including the ‘Zhejiang Eight Flavors’. The bamboo area in the northeast corner of the botanical garden has a large bamboo forest, which is especially tranquil in the summer. Among all the attractions, the Lingfeng Plum Blossom Exhibition on the west side of the botanical garden is worth visiting. The large flower exhibition held here every early spring is a significant event in Hangzhou, with plum bonsai and various spring flowers blooming, making for excellent photo opportunities.

In addition to observing plants, there is a rectangular pool at Yuquan near the landscape garden on the north side of the botanical garden, filled with plump green fish and red and yellow carps, making it a great place for fish watching and resting, and it is particularly popular among children, living up to the title ‘Fish Paradise’ inscribed under the eaves by Dong Qichang. The Han Meilin Art Museum nearby showcases many works by Mr. Han Meilin, with the first floor featuring various metal exhibits and the second floor displaying paintings. If you are interested in art, it’s worth a visit.
