The museum is divided into three floors, primarily consisting of the first floor’s exhibition halls for the primitive society to the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and the Five Dynasties, as well as the Canal Hall. The second floor features exhibition halls for the Song Dynasty, the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, a section dedicated to century-old shops, and a temporary exhibition hall. The third floor is home to the stamp exhibition hall and the calligraphy and painting hall. The exhibits mainly showcase precious and high-quality cultural relics unearthed in Hangzhou over the years, comprehensively and focally reflecting the historical face of Hangzhou. Advanced audio, light, and electrical technologies are used to enrich the display efficacy, creating an intuitive and perceptual atmosphere for visitors. Among the museum’s exhibits are national treasure-level artifacts such as the Warring States Crystal Cup and the Yue Kiln Brown Colored Celadon Lantern. Over 200 national second-level and above cultural relics are on display, including jade and stone artifacts from the Liangzhu period and Wu Yue stone carving star charts. The museum also employs various high-tech methods to showcase simulated landscapes along the Song Dynasty Grand Canal and the charm of Hangzhou’s century-old shops.
Opening hours are from 09:00 to 16:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays to Sundays throughout the year; the museum is closed all day on Tuesdays.
