Hangzhou’s Nine Walls, a remarkable transformation of the Southern Song Dynasty Imperial Street, are the brainchild of Professor Yang Qilin, Dean of the School of Public Art at the China Academy of Art. This artistic project consists of nine meticulously crafted earthen walls, each with a facade replicated in a 1:1 scale. These walls are not just ordinary; they are embedded with items that echo the past, such as vintage bicycles, wooden staircases, old electric meters, and coal stoves. These elements work together to recreate the living scenes of old Hangzhou residents from the last century, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The Nine Walls are open all year round and accessible 24/7, making them a constant reminder of Hangzhou’s past and a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its historical identity.
