Heqiao Ancient Town is nestled along the Liuxi River to the south of Lin’an City, known for its abundance of rivers and bridges. The architecture within the town primarily features the Huizhou style, making it a less commercialized ancient town.
It is part of the Liuxi River Scenic Area and the endpoint of the Liuxi River rafting. Sitting on a bamboo raft and admiring the riverside ancient town gives one the feeling of stepping into an ink painting.
Shops along Heqiao Old Street still maintain the ‘front shop, back workshop’ style of the past, with visible signs of old stores such as ‘Xu Yilun’, ‘Ji Shan Tang’, ‘Chai Zhizhen’, ‘Hu Sensheng’, ‘Hui Yuan Tang’, ‘Chang Nan Police Station’, and ‘Yue Lu Sedan Chair Service’. Through these historical door and courtyard walls, one can reminisce about the grandeur and splendor of the ancient town in its prime.
Here, the old buildings from the late Qing Dynasty still stand, wartime slogans are still present, and Cultural Revolution slogans are ubiquitous. The Taiping Canal on the old street is a distinctive feature of the ancient town, with water diverted from the Puxi River flowing in front of every household. It is one meter wide and two meters deep, with exposed stone slabs flush with the road surface, mortise and tenon joints, and clear wells with stone steps at intervals, facilitating residents in fetching water, washing rice, washing clothes, and firefighting.
The opening hours are from 08:30 to 16:30 all year round.
