Heqiao Ancient Town

Heqiao Ancient Town is located on the banks of the Liuxi River to the south of Lin’an City, named for its numerous rivers and bridges. The architecture in the town is primarily of the Hui style, making it an ancient town that has not yet been commercialized to a great extent.

As part of the Liuxi River Scenic Area, Heqiao Ancient Town is also the endpoint of the Liuxi River drifting. Sitting on a bamboo raft and admiring the ancient town by the water gives one the feeling of stepping into an ink painting.

The shops on the old street of Heqiao still retain the appearance of ‘front shop, back workshop’ from that era. You can see old stores such as ‘Xu Yilun’, ‘Jishan Hall’, ‘Chai Zhizhen’, ‘Hu Sensheng’, ‘Huiyuantang’, ‘Changnan Police Station’, and ‘Yuelu Sedan Chair Shop’. Through these historical door and courtyard walls, one can reminisce about the grandeur and glory of the ancient town back then.

Here, the old buildings from the late Qing Dynasty still stand, the slogans from the Anti-Japanese War are still present, and the slogans from the Cultural Revolution are ubiquitous. The Taiping Ditch on the old street is a distinctive landscape of the ancient town, with water channeled from the Puxi River flowing in front of every household. It is one meter wide and two meters deep. The exposed stone slabs are flush with the road surface, with mortise and tenon joints. There are clear wells every so often, with stone steps for easy access by residents for water collection, rice washing, laundry, and fire prevention.Visiting Hours and Special Considerations
