The Heshang Scenic Area is located 10 kilometers northwest of the downtown area of Rizhao City, situated in the western Heshan Mountain Range in Heshan Town. The scenic area is adjacent to the downtown area to the south and the golden coastal tourism area to the east, connected to the ‘Lunan National Forest Park’ known for its golden sandy beaches by a high-grade tourist special line. It is close to the ‘Tong San Expressway’ and ‘National Highway 204’, just six kilometers away from the Lian Village exit of the Tong San Expressway, making transportation extremely convenient.
The scenic area was established in the early 1990s and, through nearly two decades of environmental protection and vegetation restoration, its natural environment has become one of the best in Rizhao. The ‘Rizhao Giant Book’ cliff carving within the area is a landmark of Rizhao City, sharing fame worldwide with the golden sandy beaches along the coast, and is an important attraction in Rizhao’s tourism plan for ‘mountain and sea tourism’.
The Heshan where the scenic area is located is named ‘the source of all rivers’, with an elevation of 628 meters, and is the highest peak among the eastern ranges of Rizhao. Its mountainous terrain is rugged, majestic, yet elegant and beautiful, with historical sites and scenic spots everywhere. The giant book representing the modern image of Rizhao, the two characters ‘Rizhao’, are carved on the cliff at the top of the mountain. The character ‘Ri’ is 20 meters long and 17.5 meters wide, and the character ‘Zhao’ is 25 meters long and 25.5 meters wide. It is the world of Chinese character cliff carvings, recorded in the Guinness World Records.
