The Ancient Imperial Tomb – Hanlingyuan
Yangzhou Hanlingyuan is also called the Guangling King’s Tomb Museum. It is a scenic area that combines garden architecture. The original site of the tomb is actually in Gaoyou. The museum is relocated and replicated according to the original proportion. Currently, it mainly features the tombs of Liu Xu, the king of Guangling in the Han Dynasty, and his queen. Beside it, there is also a coffin chamber of the queen’s tomb.
It is a wooden coffin tomb of the ‘Huangchang Ticou’ style. This is the prominent feature of the Han tombs in Hanlingyuan. Huangchang is the heart of cypress. The heart of cypress is yellow, so it is called Huangchangzi. ‘Ticou’ is a burial style that began in ancient times and was more common in the Zhou Dynasty and the Han Dynasty. Huangchang Ticou is the coffin chamber of the imperial tombs of the Western Han Dynasty. It is a frame structure piled up with cypress wood around. Hanlingyuan is grand in scale and exquisitely made, becoming a typical representative of the wooden coffin tomb of the ‘Huangchang Ticou’ style and a great miracle in architectural history.
