The former site of Ho Chien Factory, originally established in 1912, was the first comprehensive processing plant established by foreign capital in Xiaguan after the opening of Nanjing. It was one of the most modern food processing factories in Nanjing and even across the country at that time. It was an industrial enterprise with colonial comprador characteristics and a forefront for the Nanjing working class’s struggle against imperialism, feudalism, exploitation, and oppression. It is one of the important bases for studying the history of the Chinese workers’ movement. After the fall of Nanjing in 1937, Ho Chien Factory was forced to cease production and later became a refugee camp. It is open all year round and accessible 24/7.
