Lian Tang is located in Qingpu District, southwest of Shanghai. The ancient town’s old street is situated on both sides of the town’s central river, with two stone-paved roads facing each other across the river. The unique landscape of Lian Tang is characterized by ‘tall houses, narrow alleys, and buildings across the street, with small bridges and flowing water at the homes’. The houses along the streets feature high ridges and eaves, overhanging buildings, river piers, long corridors, secluded lanes, and deep residences, presenting the ancient town with a simple, peaceful, and quiet appearance. More than ten ancient bridges from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties span across the city river, shaded by weeping willows. Each bridge has its own style, and small wooden boats occasionally glide gently by. As people walk on the bridges and boats sail below, the reflections of bridges, boats, houses, and people ripple in the gentle waves. The architectural characteristics of the old houses on both banks are distinctly contrasted: Shang Tang Street has many continuous two-story buildings with street-facing entrances, which were once mostly shops, and the back of the houses face the water, with built-up platforms for both storing goods and enjoying the view and cool breezes; Xia Tang Street has more residential courtyards with round-headed gable walls, whitewashed walls, and black tiles, with front doors along the river. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
