Hongyang Ancient Residences

Hongyang Village, a historical and cultural preservation area in Zhejiang Province, is located in Xinjian Town within the Xiandu Scenic Area of Jinyun County. In 933 AD, Zhu Qingyuan and his brother, the former secretaries of the Wu Yue Kingdom, settled in Jinyun to escape the chaos of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Since their original hometown was Xinyang in Henan, they named the village ‘Hongyang’. The village has a long-standing history and a rich cultural heritage. The Zhu family has been passing down the tradition of farming and reading, emphasizing agriculture and commerce, resulting in a continuous emergence of talents and wealth. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, eight imperial scholars emerged, forming the ‘Yiyang Poetry School’. The existing water system of one stream and two ponds, and the village layout of one street and five alleys, were designed in the Yuan Dynasty. More than ten ancient ancestral halls and hundreds of old residences, totaling over 1500 rooms, mostly built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, form a clan manor-style ancient residential architectural complex. In the village, there is the Song Dynasty’s ancient temple ‘Fuchang Temple’, which combines three teachings, the Yuan Dynasty’s ‘Bashi Gate’, and the stone ‘Xihan’ bestowed by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty in front of ‘Bashi Gate’. Ancient bridges, agricultural tools, furniture, murals, poems, plaques, carvings, and the Hongyang window paper-cutting, which is unique in Chinese folk art, as well as the remains of farmers’ uprisings throughout the ages and the ancient folk activities, constitute a rare thousand-year-old cultural village in Jiangnan.
