Hoxia Ancient Town is located in the northwest corner of Huai’an District, Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, at the ancient mouth where the ancient Han Canal meets the Huai River. Formerly known as Beichen Town, it is one of the core protected areas of Huai’an’s historical and cultural city. This place has given birth to historical celebrities such as the heroine Liang Hongyu and the great literary figure Wu Cheng’en.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, 67 Jinshi (advanced scholars), 123 Juren (candidates), and 12 Hanlin (academicians) emerged from this area, earning it the title of ‘Hometown of Jinshi’ with a profound cultural heritage. Hoxia boasts five distinctive features: a cultural stronghold, a military and political stronghold, a salt merchant stronghold, a stronghold of Chinese medicine (the birthplace of Shanyang medicine), and a gastronomic stronghold (the birthplace of Huaiyang cuisine).
