Hu Pao Park is located in the southwest mountainous area of West Lake. It is home to the renowned “Third Best Spring in the World” – Hu Pao Dream Spring. The water from Hu Pao Spring is famous for its sweet and mellow taste and is believed to have certain health benefits when consumed regularly. Locals can often be seen carrying buckets to collect the water here, and brewing Longjing tea with Hu Pao Spring water is a well-known perfect match.
The area around Hu Pao Spring was originally Hu Pao Temple. It got its name from a dream of the monk Xingkong during the Tang Dynasty. He dreamt of a tiger digging out spring water in this location. It is also the place where the legendary monk Ji Gong attained Nirvana. Visitors can see attractions such as Ji Gong Hall and Ji Gong Pagoda Courtyard. The latter is the place where Ji Gong’s remains are enshrined.
The modern art master Li Shutong (Master Hongyi) also took monastic vows here. Now there is a Li Shutong Memorial Hall, which displays over a hundred artifacts from Li Shutong’s life. Hu Pao Park has a serene environment. As one walks up the mountain following the natural terrain, there are many scenic spots such as pavilions, spring pools, and Arhat Halls. At the spring observation point, one can see a statue of a tiger digging out the spring.
The park is lush with foliage and is an excellent place to escape the summer heat. Taking a break at the teahouse here and savoring Longjing tea brewed with Hu Pao Spring water is an incredibly pleasant experience.Opening hours: 07:00 – 17:30 all year round.
