Hua’ao Island

Hua’ao Island is located in the waters of Sanmen Bay at the southern part of Xiangshan. The island is characterized by its rugged peaks, peculiar rocks, and secluded caves. Especially the crystalline stone forest spread along a one-kilometer coastline is majestic and spectacular. Various thin and strip-shaped stones are densely packed together, orderly arranged, and vary in length and thickness. The thickest ones require two people to embrace and the tallest reach up to five or six stories high. Some resemble towering swords pointing to the sky, while others look like cranes facing the sea, known as the ‘Fairy’s Sawed Rocks’. Experts have identified that the stone forest of Hua’ao Island is actually a passageway for the central volcanic magma from the Late Jurassic period. The four-sided or six-sided stone columns are compact black fine-grained basalt. The surfaces have turned yellow-brown due to seawater erosion and weathering, representing an important primary structure of volcanic rocks. This is a result of vertical fissures formed under uniform cooling and slow contraction after volcanic eruptions, creating the unique ‘Sea Stone Forest’ landscape.
