The Huaian Chuzhou Museum (China Grand Canal Museum) is located in Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, historically known as Chuzhou. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the imperial court established the Canal Transportation Governor’s Office in Huai’an, which was in charge of the national canal transportation. In 2002, the remains of the canal transportation hall, second hall, and their attached buildings were discovered successively, along with a large number of architectural stone carvings. In October 2000, they were announced as the 5th batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units by the Jiangsu Provincial Government.
To fully display and protect this historically significant site and to conduct more complete research on ancient canal transportation history, the relevant national departments decided to build a China Grand Canal Museum on the foundation of the original canal transportation governor’s office site, which is currently the only large-scale thematic museum in China reflecting the theme of canal transportation. The museum is open all year round from 08:30 to 17:30, with adjustments made according to seasonal changes.
