Huaihai Road

Huaihai Road is a commercial street on an equal footing with Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It is divided into three sections: Huaihai East Road, Huaihai West Road, and Huaihai Middle Road. Among them, Huaihai Middle Road is prosperous with numerous department stores and is known as the ‘Champs-Élysées of the East’. Walking on the neon-lit street at night, you can feel the unique fashion atmosphere of Shanghai.

Different from Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, which symbolizes Shanghai’s commercial history, Huaihai Road commercial street everywhere shows fashion and style. Here there are large department stores, trendy and petty bourgeois brand clothing stores, as well as various specialty stores and restaurant beverage stores. On Huaihai Road, you can enjoy shopping and delicious food. When tired from shopping, you can take a rest in the street green space or go to watch a movie.

The eastern section of Huaihai Middle Road (from South Xizang Road to South Chongqing Road) gathers many office buildings. There are also medium-sized shopping malls such as Pacific Department Store Huaihai Store, Shanghai Times Square, Hong Kong Plaza, and Shanghai Plaza, as well as computer plazas such as Buynow and Cybermart. It is only 400 meters from here to People’s Square to the north. If you go south for more than 300 meters, you can reach famous scenic spots such as the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China and Xintiandi.

The department stores in the middle section of Huaihai Middle Road (from South Shaanxi Road to South Chongqing Road) are relatively concentrated. There are fashionable department stores such as Parkson, Printemps, Yongxin Department Store, and Isetan Huating. You can buy various trendy commodities and brand clothing. In addition, there are stores such as Shanghai Women’s Products Store, Gujin Bra Company, and National Native Produce Food Company, as well as many high-end brand specialty stores and flagship stores.

So if you come for shopping, most of it is on this section. You can take Metro Line 1 or Line 10 and get off at South Shaanxi Road Station. From the western section of Huaihai Middle Road (west of South Shaanxi Road) all the way to Huaihai West Road, the commercial atmosphere gradually disappears and is replaced by many residential areas and old foreign-style houses. Here there are also scenic buildings such as Shanghai Library.

Huaihai East Road is relatively short but connects to Renmin Road. It is not very far to walk to the Chenghuangmiao tourist area, which takes about 15-20 minutes. Open all year round and open all day.
