On the banks of the ancient Yellow River in Xuzhou urban area stands an antique high-rise building with double eaves. This is the Huanglou restored in 1988. Historically, the Huanglou was built by Su Shi, the magistrate of Xuzhou 900 years ago, on the east gate of Xuzhou City in August of the Yuanfeng year (1078) of Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty after leading the people and soldiers of Xuzhou to defeat the flood. Because earth can overcome water, it was painted with loess and named Huanglou. There are many inscriptions in the Huanglou. Among them, the famous one is the ‘Ode to Huanglou’ written by Su Zhe and written in person by Su Shi. ‘Appreciating the moon at Huanglou’ has also become one of the eight ancient scenic spots in Xuzhou.
