Huangqiao Town was established during the Yuanfeng period of the Northern Song Dynasty and is a millennium-old town with a long history and a town with a rich cultural heritage. It is located south of the Yangtze River, connected to Rugao in the east, and adjacent to Jiangyan in the north, serving as an important gateway from the central and northern parts of Jiangsu to the southern part. Huangqiao has historically been known as a water hub with the phrase ‘dividing Huai pirates in the north and connecting to the river tides in the south.’ Provincial Highway 334, Ru-Huang Line, and Jiang-Ba Line intersect within the town, while Ningjingyan and Ningtong expressways pass by Huangqiao, and the Xin (Yi) Chang (Xing) railway has a passenger and freight marshalling station in Huangqiao.
Huangqiao has a long history and is a gathering place for talented individuals. Over 2,000 well-preserved buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as a few from the Song dynasty, still stand in Huangqiao. There are three traditional ancient districts, east, south, and west, covering an area of nearly 30 hectares. Huangqiao is also the site of the Huangqiao Campaign, commanded by the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries, and many revolutionary historical sites are still preserved. During the Anti-Japanese War, a battle in Huangqiao that shocked China and abroad added new glory to Huangqiao’s history, and the Huangqiao Baked Cakes song has since been sung throughout the country.
