Huanxiu Bridge, constructed in 1581 during the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli era, spans the former Xiaotong and Beicuwei, making it one of the earliest high bridges in Xitang. It is said that on a clear day, one can stand atop the bridge and gaze northward to the green mountains by Lake Tai. After collapsing in 1944, it was rebuilt as a wooden bridge, and later, in 1997, it was reconstructed as a stone arch bridge.
When boats pass through the arch, one can clearly see a couplet on both sides of the bridge piers, ‘Boats pass through the jade ring, people walk on the rainbow belt,’ which describes two ways of crossing the bridge: by boat through the jade-like ring below, and by walking across the top of the bridge. Huanxiu Bridge connects the Misty Corridor to the bustling West Street and is the only way from the corridor to the Stone Skin Alley. Regardless of whether it’s a sunny, rainy day, or night, standing on the bridge and looking out over the water town, one sees the layers of grey walls and white tiles, rows of bright red lanterns hanging high along the river, and the black awning boats swaying with the waves, creating a romantic scene. The bridge is open all year round, 24/7. A must-visit tip: The ‘One Line Sky’ Euryale Ferox cake workshop under Huanxiu Bridge (No. 52 Tongyu Street) is said to be one of the most authentic in Xitang! The osmanthus-flavored Euryale Ferox cake is recommended for its soft, sticky texture, clear sweetness, and osmanthus fragrance, making it delicious and not greasy.Huanxiu Bridge
