Huayang Cave is as renowned as Maoshan, being a famous natural karst cave in the Maoshan area. It is said that the Three Mao Zhenjun once secluded themselves in the cave for cultivation, and Tao Hongjing of the Qi and Liang dynasties established the Huayang San Guan here. Above the entrance of the cave are three large characters – Huayang Cave, each character is about one meter square, and it is said to be the handwriting of Su Dongpo. During Emperor Kangxi’s southern tour, he left behind calligraphy for the Eighth Cave Heaven here. According to the Qing Dynasty’s Dong Guang’s ‘Maoshan Records’, Huayang Cave has a total of five entrances (two in the south), also known as Wu Bian Men, with three visible and two hidden. The east-west length is 45 miles, and the north-south depth is 35 miles. What is seen now is the west entrance of Huayang Cave. It is open all year round and available 24/7.
