Huqiu Tower is located on Huqiu Mountain in the northwestern suburbs of Suzhou City, 5 kilometers away from the city center. According to legend, King Fuchai of Wu in the Spring and Autumn Period buried his father (Helü) here. Three days after the burial, a white tiger perched on it, hence the name Huqiu Mountain, abbreviated as Huqiu. Huqiu Tower is a famous ancient tower of the Song Dynasty at home and abroad.
It was built in the sixth year of Xiande in the Later Zhou Dynasty of the Five Dynasties (959 AD) and completed in the second year of Jianlong in the Northern Song Dynasty (961 AD). The tower has seven levels and eight sides. The inner and outer two layers of fang columns and half arches, with brick body and wooden eaves. It is a representative work of brick towers in the Yangtze River Basin in the 10th century. Due to many fires from the Song Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, the wooden eaves on the top were all damaged. Now the tower is 47.5 meters high. In 1956, a large number of cultural relics were found in the tower, including rare art treasures such as Yue kiln and lotus stone turtle.
