The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall, the first building in China completely floating on vibration isolators and one of the earliest professional venues in China to apply ‘3D holographic sound technology’, has now been officially put into operation. This building located in the historical style protection area of Shanghai is shaped like a ‘big saddle’. Its dynamic curves and simple terra cotta facades complement the styles of surrounding buildings. The concert hall is designed by the architectural master Arata Isozaki and includes two sunken concert halls, one large and one small, and an entrance hall. The large hall can accommodate 1,200 spectators, and the small hall can accommodate 400 spectators. It is also an advanced 3D holographic recording studio. As most of the surrounding buildings are immovable cultural relics and excellent historical protection buildings, the building height of the concert hall is limited, and more than two-thirds of the construction work is carried out underground. At the same time, to isolate the subway noise only 6 meters away, the designer placed the concert hall on the vibration isolator springs like a ‘Simmons mattress’, thus giving birth to the earliest ‘fully floating building’ in China. The acoustic design part of the concert hall is designed by the Japanese acoustic master Yasuhisa Toyota. Among them, the 400-person chamber music concert hall adopts ‘3D holographic sound technology’ to achieve accurate positioning of all sound image positions in the three dimensions of front, back, left, right, and up and down. When a clarinet player is tuning, the sound quality is so penetrating that the audience can obtain an ‘immersive’ experience.

The opening hours of the venue depend on the time of performances or activities.
