The Philharmonic ‘Jazz Marvelous Life’ series performance orchestra: RJ Jazz Orchestra (RJ Big Band), established in September 2011 in Shanghai, is one of the most experienced jazz orchestras in the country. Since its establishment, the orchestra has pursued high quality in the path of jazz music art, and its performance repertoire covers various musical styles from traditional American jazz of the 1930s and the golden age of big bands to today’s pop, funk, and rock. Former music directors and conductors include jazz saxophonist, educator, composer, and arranger Mr. Qian Yu, and vocal artist, vocal educator Ms. Sun Lisha. The current conductor is saxophonist, educator Mr. Xue Yue. The meaning of RJ is ‘Real & Jazz’, where Real refers to authentic self, emotions, environment, difficulties, reality, happiness, and perseverance, and Jazz refers to the orchestra’s musical origin, the trials of jazz, direction, goals, and commitment. In the growth process of continuously overcoming various difficulties, the passion for jazz and team cohesion that has burst forth have become the driving force for this group to strive and never give up. While RJ perceives and spreads the charm of jazz, it interprets a positive and uplifting attitude towards life with music, which is precisely this love for jazz and the philosophy of enjoying life that has formed RJ’s slogan ‘Love Jazz, Enjoy Life’. In June 2013, the orchestra collaborated with Hollywood composer and Emmy Award winner for Best Music, Chinese film Huabiao Award winner for Best Music, the famous composer Nathan Wang, to score the film ‘My Lucky Star’, which was produced and starred in by Zhang Ziyi. The subsequently recorded soundtrack album of the same name was released on iTunes. RJ Orchestra is united by pure love and gathers musical talents. For several consecutive years, the orchestra has been invited to perform at China’s largest jazz festival, ‘Jazz Shanghai Festival’, and has been rated as the best jazz team. The orchestra has won the championship of the Jazz Talent Finals ‘Most Professional Jazz Talent’.
