Jiangnan Tianchi is a pumped-storage power station, nestled in the depression on the summit of a group of mountains. Standing on the high platform, one can admire the interplay of mountains and reservoir, capturing the beautiful scenery in a single glance. Every May, a sea of rhododendron flowers forms around the Tianchi. In winter, due to its high altitude, visitors can enjoy the spectacular and charming snowscapes.
Upon entering the Tianchi scenic area, one can directly ascend the steps to the Tianhuangping Pavilion for a view of the Tianchi on the left and the mountains on the right. Then, visitors can proceed to the sightseeing station to take a sightseeing bus that travels counterclockwise along the road encircling the Tianchi. Along the road, there are several scenic spots, starting with the Ancient Sun Calendar Square and the Observatory.
The dragon pillars with iron rods at the top are used to calculate the time of the solar calendar, showcasing the history of ancient astronomy. The observatory on the mountain is usually not open to the public, but during special celestial events like meteor showers, visitors can inquire with the scenic area in advance to participate in night sky observation activities.
Continuing forward to the lake’s opposite side of the viewing platform, another viewing platform offers a different perspective of the lake and mountains. Along the roadside, there are attractions such as the Castle of Love and the Oriental Auspicious Reclining Buddha, all of which are primarily focused on lake and mountain views, and can be experienced one by one. On the southwest side of the lake is the grass skiing field and the expansion base, offering various entertainment projects and serving as an excellent place for leisure and relaxation.
Additionally, within the Jiangnan Tianchi scenic area, there is the Jiangnan Tianchi Ski Resort, which is open in winter and allows visitors to experience the joy of skiing. Outside the scenic area, the Jiangnan Tianchi Resort provides rest and relaxation, along with a mountain hot spring for leisure.
Opening hours are from 09:00 to 17:00 all year round. Preferential policies include: Children under 1.2 meters (not including) are free; children between 1.2 meters (including) and 1.5 meters (not including) enjoy half price; seniors aged 60 (including) to 70 (not including) can enjoy a 20% discount with a senior citizen card or ID; seniors aged 70 (including) and above enjoy half price with a senior citizen card; veterans and active-duty military personnel with valid documents enjoy half price; and teachers with a 30-year teaching certificate enjoy half price.
Additional notes: The ski resort is located inside the Jiangnan Tianchi scenic area and requires the purchase of the main scenic area ticket to enter and ski. The hot spring is adjacent to the scenic area and does not require the purchase of the main scenic area ticket. There are no children’s or senior citizen’s discounted tickets for skiing.
1. Free policy: Children under 1.2 meters are exempt from the scenic area ticket.
2. Preferential policy: a. Children between 1.2 meters and 1.5 meters can purchase a child ticket to enjoy a 50% discount on the listed price of the scenic area ticket (only applies to the main ticket discount). b. For the hot spring, children under 1.4 meters need to purchase a child hot spring ticket, which can be bought at the scenic area’s front desk for 98 yuan per person.
The self-driving road to Tianchi is winding and in poor condition (with a high risk of snow and slippery surfaces in winter). Please be mindful of the road conditions, and if traveling by car, it is advisable to have an experienced driver at the wheel.
Surrounding Tianchi, there are several tourist attractions such as Changgudongtian and Gaoshan Hot Springs, which can be visited together. For those who wish to stay overnight, the Jiangnan Tianchi Resort is available for accommodation.
