The Jiangnan Wood Carving Exhibition Hall, also known as the ‘Hall of a Hundred Flowers’, was originally the grand mansion of the Xu family in the Dongzha area. The architecture itself is an exquisite piece of art, with carved beams and painted rafters.
The museum houses a collection of fine Jiangnan wood carvings, among which the ‘Guo Ziyi’s Birthday Celebration Riding Door Carved Beam’ made from a whole piece of camphor wood is a must-see and considered the treasure of the museum.
The wood carvings in the museum are rich in material, including folk tales such as the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and Guo Ziyi’s Birthday Celebration, scenes of daily life such as fishing, cricket fighting, and drum beating, as well as traditional patterns like dragons and phoenixes, plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, all imbued with the local Jiangnan folklore.
Tour groups visit the wood carving museum every day, and by listening to the guides’ explanations, you will gain a deeper understanding of the local customs and carving skills. The museum is open all year round from 07:00 to 18:00.
