The Jiangnan Woodcarving Exhibition Hall, also known as the Baihua Hall, was originally the luxurious residence of the Xu family in Dongzhai. The architecture itself is a piece of art with beautifully carved beams and painted rafters.
Inside the museum, there are numerous exquisite Jiangnan woodcarvings, among which the ‘Guo Ziyi Celebrating Birthday Riding Door Carved Beam’ made from a whole piece of camphor wood is a must-see and the treasure of the museum. The woodcarvings in the museum are rich in material, including folk tales such as the Eight Immortals crossing the sea and Guo Ziyi’s birthday celebration, scenes of everyday life such as fishing, fighting crickets, and playing drums and gongs, as well as traditional patterns like the auspicious dragon and phoenix, and the four gentlemen of plants – plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, all brimming with Jiangnan folk customs. Tour groups visit the woodcarving museum every day, and listening to the tour guides’ explanations will give you a deeper understanding of the local customs and woodcarving skills. The museum is open all year round from 07:00 to 18:00.Jiangnan Woodcarving Museum
