The archway is the first stop to enter Jiang Mu’s cemetery. The stone archway is of four columns and three gates. The four characters ‘Jiang Mu’s Tomb Path’ are engraved on the middle gate. Therefore, from here to Jiang Mu’s tomb is collectively called ‘Jiang Mu’s Tomb Path’. From the stone archway to Jiang Mu’s tomb is a 668-meter pebble road flanked by pine forests. After walking about 300 meters, there is a pavilion built across the road.
Its shape is very much like the square scarf hat of ancient scholars. 168 meters up from the tomb lodge is Jiang Mu’s tomb. Only four big characters ‘Kuan Fan Zu Shi’ are engraved on the fan-shaped railing in the middle of the tomb. They were inscribed by Sun Yat-sen himself. The character ‘kuan’ has one more stroke than the character ‘pot’. Pronounced as ‘kun’, it means the road in the palace and represents women. ‘Fan’ means model. ‘Zu’ means sufficient. ‘Shi’ means example. The combined meaning of these four characters is ‘a model among women and an example’. The horizontal tombstone ‘Jiang Mu’s Tomb’ was also written by Sun Yat-sen himself. There is a picture of phoenix bamboo engraved on the worship platform, implying that Jiang Mu is a golden phoenix flying out of Gezhu Village. The tomb lodge of Jiang Mu’s cemetery is called ‘Ci’an’. It is the place where descendants of the Jiang family observe mourning and live. Because only the loving mother is buried in the tomb and there is no strict father, it is named ‘Ci’an’. It was initially built in 1923 and expanded again in 1930. There are three bungalows and five main rooms. There are four stone tablets in the main room of Ci’an that are worth stopping to appreciate. Facing the main entrance is Sun Yat-sen’s ‘Funeral Oration for Madame Jiang’, written by Tan Yankai. On the back is ‘A Brief Biography of My Mother, Madame Wang’, which recounts the life of Wang Caiyu. On the left and right walls are engraved ‘Lament for Mother’ and ‘Comforting Generalissimo Jiang’.
