The Jiangsu Kunqu Theatre was established in November 1977. Its predecessor was the Jiangsu Kunqu Troupe stationed in Nanjing. In 1960, to further prosper Kunqu and expand the scope of performances, the superiors decided to transfer 13 performers of the ‘Ji’ generation, including Zhang Jiqing from the Jiangsu Suzhou Kunqu Troupe, to Nanjing to establish the first troupe of the Jiangsu Kunqu Troupe.
The one remaining in Suzhou was changed to the second troupe. In 1972, the first and second troupes merged again and were stationed in Suzhou. In 1977, the provincial Party committee and government decided to revive Kunqu. The first troupe was ordered to be transferred back to Nanjing again and the provincial Kunqu Theatre was established.
