Jiaoshan Mountain is not high, about more than 70 meters. It is collectively known as the ‘Three Mountains of Jingkou’ together with Jinshan Mountain and Beigu Mountain. It is located in the middle of the Yangtze River to the northeast of Zhenjiang, facing Xiangshan on the opposite bank across the river. Jiaoshan Mountain is covered with towering ancient trees and hides many stone carvings, ancient steles and many scenic spots such as temples. The main entrance of Jiaoshan Mountain is at the foot of Xiangshan. To climb Jiaoshan Mountain, one needs to take a ferry first. It takes less than about 5 minutes to reach the opposite bank. Generally, when visiting Jiaoshan Mountain, people go up the mountain to the west after landing, and can see all the scenic spots of Jiaoshan Mountain. After landing, you will pass an antique stone bridge. In front of you is a white marble archway with four pillars and three gates. The front side of the archway is gilded and engraved with four big characters – ‘Scenic Spot of Jiaoshan Mountain’. The back side also has four characters – ‘Legacy of Han and Jin Dynasties’. After a few steps, you will reach the mountain gate of Dinghui Temple. Shi Nai’an wrote in ‘Water Margin’: ‘There is a temple on Jiaoshan Mountain, hidden in a mountain depression. You can’t see its shape. It is called a temple wrapped by mountains.’ This is talking about Dinghui Temple. In the small courtyard on the east side of the temple, in the middle is the Memorial Hall of Master Mingshan. On the table in the hall is a bust of Master Mingshan. There is a long corridor along the wall. On the wall are many stones engraved with praises for Master Mingshan. On the west side of the temple, symmetrical to the Mingshan Hall, is Jiaogong Shrine. Inside is a statue of Jiao Guang. The archway in front of the shrine is engraved with the words ‘Three Imperial Edicts Archway’. The Guanlan Pavilion on the east side of Dinghui Temple is the temporary palace of Emperor Qianlong during his southern inspection. It is now the Buddhist College of Jiaoshan Mountain. Next to the Qianlong temporary palace is Baomoxuan (namely the Stele Forest of Jiaoshan Mountain), which treasures more than 400 steles of past dynasties. Second only to the Stele Forest in Xi’an, it is the largest stele forest in Jiangnan. Among them, the famous one is the ‘Epitaph on Burying Cranes (yì)’. It is said that a calligrapher wrote an inscription to commemorate his domesticated crane that died. This inscription was originally carved on the stone wall of Jiaoshan Mountain. Later, it was damaged by lightning. What we see now is a later rubbing. Not far to the east of Baomoxuan is the ancient battery of Jiaoshan Mountain. The battery is arranged in a horseshoe shape and faces the great river. It is an important relic of the struggle against British aggression and imperialism. Climbing up the mountain from the north of the ancient battery to the west, you will reach the Xijiang Tower, which is the former site of the Zhensi Pagoda. The tower has two floors and six corners. Before the construction of the Wanfo Pagoda, this tower was a scenic spot for overlooking the great river. Now it is not open. Continuing to go up along the steps all the way, after reaching the top is the Wanfo Pagoda. On both sides of the gate are engraved ‘The sea is calm’ and ‘Mainstay in the midstream’. Climbing up the Wanfo Pagoda, you can have a panoramic view of the Yangtze River. Going down the mountain to the west after passing the tower, passing through the Spectacular Pavilion, the pagoda forest, the Sanzhao Cave and another part of the stele forest – the cliff carvings, etc., you will return to Dinghui Temple again. Then take the ferry back to the main entrance of the scenic area. After leaving the scenic area, there are restaurants next to the bus stop on the opposite side. If you are hungry, you can have a meal first and then return.
