Jie Nan Shuwu, located at No. 309 Dongguan Street, is one of the significant attractions on Dongguan Street. Also known as the ‘Small Linglong Mountain Pavilion’, it is the residential garden site of salt merchants Ma Yuewan and Ma Yuelu during the Qing Dynasty’s Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. It is named ‘Jie Nan Shuwu’ because of its location south of Dongguan Street. Ma Yuewan and Ma Yuelu, as representatives of the scholarly salt merchants in the Qing Dynasty, engaged in cultural activities and supported the publication and education sectors alongside their salt business.
The book collection in the Shuwu Series Building of Jie Nan Shuwu is abundant, with more than 776 varieties, ranking first in the southeast region. Jie Nan Shuwu is bordered by Xue Jia Alley to the east, Dongguan Street to the north, Wei Jia Well to the south, and Ma Fang Alley to the west. Among them, the Small Linglong Mountain Pavilion is quite famous; in the Qing Dynasty, Yuan Mei’s ‘Suiyuan Shihua’ listed Tianjin Shuixi Village, Yangzhou Small Linglong Mountain Pavilion, and Hangzhou Xiaoshantang as the top three private gardens of the Qing Dynasty. It is open all year round from 09:00 to 17:00, with the actual business status subject to the day’s opening.Jie Nan Shuwu – A Cultural Landmark in Yangzhou
